Founded 1849. Public utilities company. Peoples Gas Light & Coke Company was founded in 1848 and became Chicago's first gas company in 1850. Under the presidency of C.K.G. Billings, Jr. (1895 to 1910), Peoples merged with twelve other companies to become a major power in public utilities in the Chicago area.
